AI does not know immigration policy!

With the rise of AI, it might seem a quick and easy way to rely on AI for immigration advice. Immigration policy is constantly changing and AI can't keep up with these changes. AI is also unable to analyse all your information and documentation to provide a clear succinct cover letter that makes sure you meet immigration instructions.

We asked AI to write a cover letter for an Accredited Employer Work Visa application for a Carpenter from the UK with three years’ relevant experience. We specifically asked it refer to relevant immigration instructions and law. We got the below:

To Immigration New Zealand,

Re: Application for Accredited Employer Work Visa – Carpenter Position

I am writing to support my application for a New Zealand Accredited Employer Work Visa (AEWV) under the Immigration Act 2009, and in accordance with relevant Immigration Instructions, including WK1 to WK6 of the Operational Manual. I have received a formal offer of employment for a Carpenter position from a New Zealand employer who holds current accreditation with Immigration New Zealand.

I am a skilled carpenter from the United Kingdom, with more than three years of hands-on experience in residential construction, commercial fit-outs, and general building maintenance. My role has included framing, formwork, finishing work, blueprint reading, and strict compliance with health and safety standards. My practical background, work ethic, and reliability make me confident in my ability to contribute positively to the New Zealand construction sector.

I understand that under WK3.10, applicants must demonstrate that they have a genuine offer of employment from an accredited employer, meet the skill and experience requirements of the role, and satisfy any registration or licensing conditions where relevant. I meet these requirements and have included all supporting documents, including my employment agreement, detailed job description, and evidence of my qualifications and experience.

As a UK citizen, I am enthusiastic about the opportunity to bring my trade expertise to New Zealand, particularly in support of industries experiencing genuine skills shortages. I appreciate New Zealand’s standards for high-quality workmanship and workplace safety, and I am fully committed to complying with all visa conditions, including those under the Immigration Instructions (WK5.5) regarding work rights and employer obligations.

Thank you for considering my application. I look forward to the opportunity to work in New Zealand and contribute to its vibrant and essential construction industry.

Yours sincerely,

The cover letter reads like a job application cover letter and seems confused to be confused as to what is trying to achieve. The immigration instructions the cover letter refer to are from the Essential Skills Work Visa that was abolished in July 2022.

A good cover letter covering off how an applicant meets immigration instructions can be the difference between an approved and a declined visa. Relying on AI could make things worse for your application. Make sure you get immigration advice from a Licensed Immigration Adviser, a real person who is up to date with the changes.
